The winter environment in the UK's mountains is like no other. During the winter months mountainous regions transform into very serious places to be. On the otherhand, times spent exploring and learning within these environments are amazing experiences and can valuble to mountaineering development.
Learning the skills required to operate in winter conditions is essential to safetly travel within the mountains. Olly can provide winter skills courses ranging from one to five days where skills can be introduced and practiced then consolidated in numerous locations.
Skills that can be covered include:
- Winter equipment and clothing
- Movement on snow
- Self arrest and self belay using an ice axe
- Use of crampons
- Winter navigation skills
- Winter weather
- Snow and avalanche awareness
- Emergency shelters
Join us for a 1 or 2 day winter skills course within the Lake District mountains.
These courses will run throughout the winter months. We cover a lot of the skills that are listed above as we travel through the winter environment, climbing some of the classic Lake District mountains.
The cost of the course will be £70 per day with a maximum of 6 on the course.

You will be expected to provide your own personal equipment. A equipment list will be sent along with a booking form following an enquiry. Your key piece of equipment will be a pair of winter walking boots that will be able to take a crampon (B1 or B2 rated). If you are unsure of your boot rating you can send me a picture of your boots to ensure that you are able to take part in the course on the day. Hire of crampons and ice axes can be arranged for an additional cost of £20 per day.
